Why Are Bees Coming Into My House?
If bees keep appearing inside your Nashville-area home, there may be a honeybee colony living inside a wall, roof, soffit, chimney, eave, or other structural cavity, with some of the bees finding a secondary route into your living space.
One stray bee coming through an open door or window usually isn't a reason for concern. But if you're finding several bees a day, bees repeatedly appearing in the same room, or bees gathering against an interior window, it's worth investigating where they're coming from.
Around Nashville and Middle Tennessee, honeybees can establish colonies in surprisingly small openings around rooflines, soffits, fascia, siding, brick veneer, chimneys, vents, and utility penetrations. The entrance may only be a small gap, while the cavity behind it provides enough protected space for a much larger colony.
Why Bees From a Hive End Up Inside the House
An established honeybee colony normally uses a primary exterior entrance. Worker bees leave during the day to forage and return through that same opening.
When bees start appearing indoors, we generally look for a few possible causes.
The colony is inside a wall or roof cavity. There may be another small opening connecting that cavity to the interior. We see this around recessed lighting, electrical and plumbing penetrations, attic openings, vents, gaps around trim, and unfinished areas of construction.
Someone has sealed the exterior entrance. This is one of the most common preventable problems with structural bee colonies. A homeowner, painter, roofer, handyman, or pest-control company sees bees entering a gap and seals it without removing the colony.
The bees don't simply disappear. If thousands of bees remain inside with an established hive, they will search for another way out. In some homes, that new route leads into the attic or directly into the living space.
For this reason, we don't recommend sealing an active honeybee entrance until the colony has been properly addressed.
Bees that get indoors often head toward light. Once inside, they commonly collect around windows and other bright areas. You can therefore find multiple bees at a window even though the colony itself is several feet away inside a wall, ceiling, or roof cavity.
There may not be a hive at all. An occasional bee indoors isn't proof of a structural colony. Recurring indoor activity combined with steady bee traffic through one exterior opening is much more significant.
Signs There May Be a Colony Inside Your House
From a safe distance, watch the exterior of the home. Pay particular attention to the roofline, soffits, fascia, siding, brick joints, chimneys, vents, utility lines, and places where different building materials meet.
An established colony will often produce repeated traffic through one specific opening. You may see bees entering and exiting the same small gap every few seconds.
Other signs we look for include:
- Persistent buzzing from a wall or ceiling
- Bees repeatedly appearing in the same room
- Multiple bees collecting at an interior window
- Honey staining or discoloration
- A sweet or unusual odor coming from a wall or ceiling
- Consistent activity around a soffit, roof edge, siding gap, chimney, vent, or fascia
- Dead or exhausted bees regularly appearing indoors
One important point: the size of the entrance doesn't tell you the size of the hive. Bees can use a very small opening and build a substantial amount of comb inside the larger protected cavity behind it.
How We Locate a Hidden Bee Colony
Finding the exterior entrance is only the first step. We then need to determine where the colony itself is established.
We watch the flight pattern and inspect how that section of the house is constructed. Depending on the property, the colony may be inside a framed wall, behind siding or brick veneer, underneath roofing, behind fascia, inside a soffit, or within a chimney chase.
The entrance isn't always directly beside the comb. Bees can enter through one opening and travel through the cavity before establishing their hive.
Once we've identified the likely location, we determine the safest and least destructive way to access it.
Structural bee removal may require carefully opening a section of siding, soffit, fascia, drywall, masonry-related finish, or roofing. The goal is to expose enough of the cavity to properly remove the colony and hive material while limiting unnecessary damage to the home.
A newer colony may have relatively little comb. A hive that has occupied a wall or roof for months or years can contain a substantial amount of wax, honey, pollen, and brood. The age and size of the colony, its location, and the home's construction all affect how involved the removal will be.
Why the Honeycomb Needs to Come Out Too
Removing or killing the flying bees doesn't resolve everything inside an established hive.
The cavity can contain wax comb, stored honey, brood, pollen, and other colony material. Leaving that material behind can create additional problems.
Honey can leak and stain ceilings or walls. Wax, honey, and abandoned hive material can attract ants and other pests. Residual hive material and odor can also make the cavity attractive to another swarm later.
For an established structural colony, the goal is to access the hive, remove the live honeybees for relocation when conditions allow, remove accessible comb and hive material, clean the cavity, address the entry point, and repair the opened area when repair is part of the service.
Don't Seal an Active Bee Entrance
If you've found the exact hole the bees are using, don't seal that opening while the colony is still active.
Sealing openings is important for preventing future bee activity, but the order matters.
If you close the entrance while the colony remains inside, you can trap the bees and force them to search through the structure for another exit. After the colony and hive material have been removed, the original entrance and appropriate nearby gaps can be sealed to reduce the chance of another colony occupying the same cavity.
Is It an Emergency If Bees Are Coming Inside?
A few bees indoors doesn't automatically make the situation an emergency, but repeated indoor activity shouldn't be ignored.
If bees are actively entering a bedroom, child's room, or another occupied area, keep children and pets away and avoid disturbing the suspected hive location.
If anyone in the household has a known severe bee-sting allergy, indoor bee activity should be treated more urgently.
Don't hit the wall, spray products blindly into openings, or start dismantling the area yourself. Disturbing an established colony without knowing exactly where it is can quickly make the situation more difficult.
What to Do If Bees Keep Coming Into Your Nashville Home
If it's one stray bee, safely get it outside and monitor the area.
If bees continue appearing, look outside from a safe distance for concentrated activity. If possible, take a short video showing where the bees are entering and exiting. Their flight pattern and the construction around the entrance can provide useful information before an inspection.
If bees are repeatedly getting inside, dealing with the individual bees won't solve the problem if an established colony is still living inside the structure.
If a colony is present, the goal is to locate it, remove the bees and accessible hive material, and address the opening that allowed them to establish inside the home.
